Keeping originality always in view - for he is false to himself who ventures to dispense within so obvious and attainable a source of interest’ (480 emphasis in original). In “The Philosophy of Composition” (1846), he talks of his awareness of effect and the importance of keeping it short: ‘I prefer commencing with the consideration of an effect. Poe chooses to write of doom, decay and death, but avoids didacticism he ‘perceived the essential impartiality of the real artist’ (ibid.). These writers were, he argues, hampered by the need to conform to a happy ending, side with one of the characters and their views, reward virtue and adhere to popular standards and beliefs. Lovecraft sees Poe as moving beyond earlier horror writers who ‘orked largely in the dark without an understanding of the psychological basis of the horror appeal’ (ibid.). Lovecraft devotes a whole chapter to Poe’s horror tales, acknowledging his mastery by calling him the ‘deity and fountain-head of all modern diabolic fiction’ (53). In his study Supernatural Horror in Literature (1927), H.P. His dark tales contain demonic pledges, walled in corpses, living death, curses, body horror, contagion and natural terrors turned weird. Edgar Allan Poe is frequently acknowledged as the originator of the horror genre.

This story starts with Katy moving to very small town in West Virginia with her mom to start over as they try to move on from her dad passing away from cancer. I stayed up all night binge reading this under the covers and knocked out all five books in about a week. This is the first book/series I’ve read by Armentrout but I will definitely be heading back for more. But this series reminded me why, when done right young adult like this can be so good. Recently I’ve been leaning more towards adult and new adult books in this genre and steering away from young adult, partly due to my age because it feels weird being all hot and bother by a teenage character and also because I’ve been wanting the more explicit sexy smut scenes. There are five primary works: Obsidian, Onyx, Opal, Origin, and Opposition. Lewis points out that we all know how we ought to behave, and yet we constantly find ourselves doing the opposite. He calls our fundamental and universal understanding of fairness, or right and wrong, “The Law of Human Nature,” distinguishing it from other natural laws (such as gravity) by the fact that humans can choose whether or not to obey it. In Book I, Lewis explores the notion of right and wrong, which he argues is, at its core, an inherently human characteristic that is not, as some would argue, merely a social construct. Lewis argues for the existence of God, and then proceeds to outline what he believes are the fundamental tenants of Christianity. One thing I greatly admire in Clare is her ability to create rich, poetic prose. From the first few pages I was sucked in. I read all the hype going around, especially since Cassandra Clare is quite diligent in answering questions from her adoring public no matter how long it takes her, bless her heart. Naturally, the second book was welcomed with open arms. I preferred the dark, brooding, handsome William Herondale to his dark, brooding, handsome descendant Jace Wayland and the heroine, though highly improper in a society of proper ladies - where abovementioned Will is concerned… ahem - is a plucky, Victorian era American chick who kicks ass, or at least tries to. Clockwork Angel was a pleasing read of contemporary fantasy and I liken it to the works of Philip Reeve, whose novels will always be special to me. In my previous review of The Clockwork Prince’s predecessor, The Clockwork Angel, I left no doubt that while I don’t like The Mortal Instruments Clare has won me as a fan of her brilliantly written prequels about the Nephilim in The Infernal Devices.
